St Paul's Church - Deptford

This "pearl in the heart of Deptford" is a tribute to great British design and craftsmanship. A remarkable example of English Italienate Baroque dramatically preserved in its spacious churchyard it remains a living church and the spiritual heart of its local community.

Thomas Archer's church is a reminder of Deptford's days as the principal Royal Naval Dockyard. Deptford was one of England's largest provincial towns and played a key role in the establishment of the North American and Australasian colonies.

Both the church and the town are still regarded as architecturally unique. The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England has referred to the church as one of London's finest Baroque buildings. Their comment on Deptford is, "Deptford was, and remains, an exceptional place."
