About Deptford

Deptford Market
Deptford lies on the south bank of the River Thames, bounded at the west by Greenland docks marina and Greenwich Town to the east. The High Street hosts a lively and attractive market every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Deptford's architecture is a great deal more impressive than can be seen from the first glance. The High Street contains several artisan's houses dating from 1680. Although these once obviously existed throughout England most have been destroyed in later development. In Deptford, on the other hand, the development has been piecemeal and thus preserving Georgian building alongside later additions. The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England refers to the High Street as "exemplary" it ...is a richly faceted, multi ethnic, and increasingly rare shopping 'high street' with a thriving market.
The Albany, an important local centre for performing arts, lies close to the High Street in Douglas Way. Hales Gallery, in the High Street, hosts many important art exhibitions. Visit also the Museum of Installation across the High Street from St. Paul's. The area boasts many other artistic and entertainment venues and, nearby, houses academic centres such as Goldsmith's College, Greenwich University, The Laban Centre and Rose Bruford College. Trinity College of Music will move to Greenwich in 2001.
Greenwich Town Centre is within walking distance and this offers the famous Royal Park and Observatory as well as the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Naval College and the Cutty Sark. Hawksmore's church of St. Alfege is also located in the Town Centre.
